From Arusha, Tanzania

Northern Circuit parks, written for your pace

A Tanzania safari is the hush before dawn, dust lifting behind a Land Cruiser, and the moment a guide pauses because something unseen has shifted in the grass. From our base in Arusha, SHOVELER SAFARI crafts private journeys across the Northern Circuit—then, if you wish, on to Zanzibar’s warm Indian Ocean.

We filter tourist noise the way our namesake bird filters water: carefully. That means private vehicles, mid-range to luxury stays, and room for birding, photography, families, or a quiet couple’s escape.

Where we take you first

These five destinations anchor most of our custom itineraries. Tell us your dates and interests—we’ll sequence the route around wildlife seasons, travel comfort, and your dream highlights.

Elephant on the Serengeti plains
Great Migration · Big Cats

Serengeti National Park

Endless grassland, kopjes catching the light, and the largest land-mammal migration on Earth. In dry months, herds push north toward the Mara River; in January–February, southern plains around Ndutu fill with calves—and the predators that follow. We time your nights for the movement that matches your travel window, with optional balloon mornings when you want the plains from above.

  • Migration & predator action
  • Hot-air balloon option
  • Photography-friendly pacing
Ngorongoro Crater landscape
Big Five · Volcanic Highlands

Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into a collapsed caldera where lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and endangered black rhino share a self-contained world. Cool crater mornings reward a warm layer and a patient guide; rim lodges and highland walks extend the day beyond the floor. We plan one full crater descent into almost every first Northern Circuit safari—because few places concentrate wildlife this tightly.

  • Reliable Big Five odds
  • Year-round viewing
  • Highlands hiking add-ons
Baobab trees and elephants in Tarangire
Elephants · Baobabs

Tarangire National Park

Ancient baobabs rise over riverine woodland where dry-season elephant herds gather by the hundreds. Quieter than the Serengeti’s busiest tracks, Tarangire suits guests who want drama without the crush— and birders who linger at wetlands for rollers, hornbills, and seasonal visitors. Often our opening act from Arusha before the highlands and plains.

  • Peak herds June–October
  • Strong birding wetlands
  • Ideal safari opener
Flamingos and wetlands at Lake Manyara
Birdlife · Tree-climbing Lions

Lake Manyara National Park

Rift Valley escarpment, groundwater forest, and alkaline lake shores packed with flamingo flocks when conditions align. Over four hundred bird species have been recorded here—true to the Shoveler spirit— alongside hippo pools and the park’s famous tree-lounging lions. Compact, scenic, and a natural bridge between Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

  • 400+ bird species
  • Forest-to-lakeshore variety
  • Perfect short stop
Zanzibar beach and turquoise water
Beach Add-on · Spice Island

Zanzibar Archipelago

After dusty game tracks, trade safari boots for soft sand. We arrange controlled beach stays—Stone Town alleys, dhow sunsets, snorkelling, and quiet east-coast resorts—so your wildlife chapter ends with salt air and Swahili hospitality. The simplest way to turn a Northern Circuit safari into a complete Tanzanian holiday.

  • Seamless post-safari flights
  • Stone Town & beach options
  • Couples & family friendly
Beyond the classic loop

Day trips & cultural chapters

Soft starts from Arusha, highland walks, and respectful visits with Maasai and Hadzabe communities— woven into longer itineraries or booked as stand-alone days.

Seasonal guidance

When should you travel?

Northern Tanzania works year-round; the “best” month depends on whether you chase migration drama, calving predators, or green-season birdlife with fewer vehicles.

Dry Season

June – October

Clearest general game viewing as animals gather at permanent water. Ideal for northern Serengeti river crossings, Tarangire’s elephant congregations, and crisp crater mornings. Peak demand—book lodges early if your dates are fixed.

Green / Wet Season

November – May

Lush landscapes, excellent birdwatching, and January–February wildebeest calving on the southern Serengeti plains. Fewer crowds and strong photography light—perfect for guests who value atmosphere and our specialised birding focus.
